Isocronous Workshop
- Artist: Isochronous
- Title: Oxygen
- Album:
- Genre:
- Length: 5:49 minutes (5.4 MB)
Its not very often we have an opportunity to do something a little out of the ordinary, but more so here at Sound & Motion Studios. At the end of every year our staff from all branches congregate in Cape town main branch to have a week of collaboration, workshops on recording, surround mixing, and a annual general meeting, oh and don't forget the staff party!
At the end of last year, for the recording workshop we invited ISOCHRONOUS, a talented and diverse band from Pretoria, to come and be our guinea pigs, and record a single called OXYGEN in our studio, the band jumped at the chance, having worked with Sound and Motion in Cape town and Johannesburg on their recent acoustic album.
Another interesting piece of the opportunity was that I (Matt James) arranged to travel to Vancouver, Canada in December '09 for a holiday, I booked a day in a renowned studio called Vogville studios, where mixed the single on a mint SSL 4000 series console using some of the most expensive and pristine outboard gear I have ever laid eyes on! ( Teletronix, API, Emperical Labs, Tubetech, Avalon etc. etc.) It was an amazing experience, and I am stoked with the result, it sounds great!

Soundlines
- Artist: Soundlines
- Title: Soundlines
- Album:
- Genre:
- Length: 2:52 minutes (2.6 MB)
Sound & Motion JHB recently hosted The Soundlines Exibition in Collaboration with Marcus Neustetter.

The Soundlines project originally began in early 2008 when Marcus drew the skyline of Johannesburg and Cape Town as sheet music and invited sound artists and musicians to interpret and respond to these images.
Joao Orecchia, Murry Turpin, Daniel Stompie Selebi, Ziza Mhlongo and Zubz responded to the challenge and collaborated to record the project at Sound & Motion JHB in March 2008.
The process of interpreting visual art into a musical sound-scape proved to be a very intriguing and exiting process from which the collective improvisation of these very talented artists produced some great results!
The resulting sound-scape's were mixed by Sound & Motion and presented at the exhibition by Marcus Neustetter in an unabridged (20m15s) and a shorter (2m52s) version along with an editioned glass artwork produced in the proportions of the glass that separated Neustetter from the sound responses in the recording studio.
Have a listen to the 2m52s version of the soundlines project which has been uploaded!

Isochronos' New Acoustic Album
Isochronos acoustic! Sound & Motion recently had the privilege to work with this very talented young band. For a brief pit stop on their coastal tour down from their native Pretoria, they spent a few days tracking drums, piano and upright bass at Sound & Motion Cape Town with Matt, then headed back to Pretoria and finished recording in our Johannesburg branch.
They recorded all their guitar tracks, strings and vocals with Richard and James, and the Johannesburg white room was perfectly suited for capturing the warm yet detailed string sound that the band was after for the album. Simon, who was in Joburg for the new Post Studio Launch was lucky enough to mix the album in our HD Music Studio.
Here are some photos of the Cape Town recording.
Lisa Bauer Quartet
- Artist: Lisa Bauer
- Title: Devil May Care - Sneak Peak
- Album:
- Genre: Jazz
- Length: 4:11 minutes (5.7 MB)
And all that Jazz! Lisa Bauer stopped by at Sound & Motion Cape Town to record her new album. Its not difficult to make magic when you are working with the best in the business: Award winning Andre Petersen putting our piano “Agatha” through her paces, Chantal Willie on the double bass and backing vocals, Kesivan Naidoo played drums, Max Starcke on acoustic guitar and Mark Snyman on saxophone. It was an incredible experience and definitely a memorable project. Lisa's performance was sparkling and the Jazz fell in love with our new Live room... The band performed everything live, the only overdubs being vocals, guitar and saxophone.
Fuzzy wrapped up mixing and mastering with Lisa last week and we are thrilled to offer you a sneak preview of “Devil May Care”. For the whole track, keep an eye out for her upcoming album release.
